Week 5: Chapter 4, Birthday in Hawaii

 Aloha everyone!

There are some pretty big timestamps in my mission that I'd like to recognize. It has now been two weeks since I have been in Hawaii as a missionary. But even more crazy; I've been a missionary for a month! Only 23 more to go!

In this past week, me and Elder Clapper have started planning for our first video for Facebook! It's going to be a short video about members of the church(and their families) can help missionaries in regards of getting to know people they can teach. It's kinda complicated to say right now and we're still feeling out the message, but it will be out soon so stay tuned!

As many of you may know, my birthday was this last Friday, August the 20th. I was given no warning, but it was the best birthday any missionary or soon-to-be 19 year old could ever have. I was sent two boxes from my family back home. They were filled with some small (but cool) presents, tons of postcards and birthday cards, and even more TONS of candy and cookies. I guess my family still doesn't understand that I'm trying NOT to gain 40 pounds on my mission. *sigh* But seriously though, I am so grateful for them sending me stuff and even more grateful that I got to call home on that day to see my family. The only downside is whenever my mom starts to cry, I cry. 😭

Missionary-stuff-wise, I've been getting to learn some Hawaiian and Japanese phrases from a brother in the Mililani 2nd ward who is tutoring Tagalog to Elder Morris.
Also this week we had another Elder staying with us while his companion was fixing his visa in Salt Lake to go to Italy. His name was Elder Baier. He had a lot of fun music so we gave him the calling of carpool DJ.

Me and Elder Clapper have been working a lot for a few different people that we think could come to church soon. One man we're visiting is John Sullivan. He's met with missionaries for a long time, but he has a smoking problem. Our main goal right now is to get him to read the Book of Mormon. But we actually found out this last week was that he was dyslexic, but that he still wants to try to read it. We motioned him over towards the Book of Mormon videos and listening to the book if he wants to and he said he'll try.

Then another family we're meeting with is the Kekoolani's. Their situation is very sensitive and complicated, but basically the 13 year old daughter wants to get baptized and her dad supports it, but the mom is not a member and is against it. Right now we are trying to get her to come to young women's activities. As of now it looks very possible that she would be interested. Her name is Kali and if you could keep her and her whole family in your prayers it would help so much.

We've met so many people this week from active member families, to people at the park or on the street who have seen missionaries and respect what they do. A cool experience we had this last week happened after a really good encounter we had with a friend referral. Elder Clapper has a feeling to go contacting in the nearby area and so we turned a corner. We saw a few bigger dudes, 3-4 of them, tailgate partying on the side of the road next to a sidewalk. We knew we were going to go say hi, but they were drinking and smoking and it was a little intimidating. When we walked over, we saw that there were actually like 7-9 of them and a lot of them were pretty big tongans. When they saw us they got excited and threw a shaka. "Hey! It's the Mormons!" As soon as we got over there, two of the bigger guys came over and hugged us. One of them told us how much he appreciated us missionaries going out, serving others, and preaching the good word no matter who they are. He bore his own testimony about Jesus Christ and we briefly gave our testimonies and then said goodbye.

Never be afraid to share what you know to be true even when situations seem scarier that they truly are. Remember to by guided by the spirit for protection bit also for inspiration.

3 Nephi 12:16 "Therefore let your light so shinebefore this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes this week and I hope you're all doing great!
But that's all for now.
Aloha kakou!(Goodbye everybody) Ke Akua pu!(God be with you!)

One of the common bird species we see all the time look like this. It looks like the bird from Rio.

My first Hawaii rainbow!

If you look closely these two "smart" cars and taking up one parking spot. Pretty funny.

This is only the first box I opened on my birthday!

This is relatable to me. If you know, you know.

Apparently these are the three ingredients to the perfect spaghetti sauce. I'll try it sometime and let you know.

First planning meeting for the video.
